Typhoon Fitow makes landfall in the Chinese province of Fujian

Fitow made landfall just south of Wenzhou in eastern China, at Fuding in Fujian province. Fitow became the strongest China typhoon landfall for the month since 1949 according to the China Meteorological Administration, with a landfall pressure of 955 mbar and sustained winds of 151 km/h.

Achille Lauro is hijacked

The Achille Lauro hijacking happened in 1985, when the Italian MS Achille Lauro was hijacked by four men representing the Palestine Liberation Front off the coast of Egypt, as she was sailing from Alexandria to Ashdod, Israel. A 69-year-old Jewish American man in a wheelchair, Leon Klinghoffer, was murdered by the hijackers and thrown overboard.

Over 7,000 dead in Haiti and the Dominican Republic after Hurricane Flora

Hurricane Flora is among the deadliest Atlantic hurricanes in recorded history, with a death total of at least 7,193. The seventh tropical storm and sixth hurricane of the 1963 Atlantic hurricane season, Flora developed from a disturbance in the Intertropical Convergence Zone.
