The first player scores four goals in an NHL debut

Auston Matthews is a player for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the NHL. He became the first player in modern NHL history to score four goals in his NHL debut. In his first season, Matthews scored 40 goals. In the midst of his rookie season, he was ranked the 2nd best active American player in the NHL.

2012

Ireland suffer their biggest competitive loss

Ireland was drawn in Group C of UEFA's 2014 World Cup qualification alongside Germany, Sweden, Austria, the Faroe Islands, and Kazakhstan. In October, Ireland suffered their largest ever competitive home defeat, 6–1 against Germany, at the Aviva Stadium.

The XIX Summer Olympic games open in Mexico City

The 1968 Summer Olympics officially known as the Games of the XIX Olympiad, was an international multi-sport event held in Mexico City, Mexico in October 1968. These were the first Olympic Games to be staged in Latin America and the first to be staged in a Spanish-speaking country.
