Apollo 12 splashdown

Second American mission to the Moon ended. Command module of the Apollo 12 spacecraft splashed into the Pacific Ocean 800 kilometers east of African Samoa. There was a minor accident during splashdown. A 16 mm camera dislodged from storage and struck Lunar Module Pilot Alan Bean in the head. He was briefly unconscious.

Darwin publishes the most influential book in biology

English naturalist Charles Darwin published his book On the Origin of Species. The book described the evolutionary theory. Darwin worked on his theory for more than 20 years. He included evidence from his voyage aboard HMS Beagle from 1831 to 1836 in the book. He was afraid of religious persecution, which delayed the publication.
