Giacomo Puccini was an Italian opera composer who has been called "the greatest composer of Italian opera after Verdi". Puccini died in Brussels from complications after the treatment of his throat cancer; uncontrolled bleeding led to a heart attack the day after surgery.

Louisa May Alcott was an American novelist and poet best known as the author of the novel Little Women and its sequels. Raised by her transcendentalist parents, Abigail May and Amos Bronson Alcott in New England, she also grew up among many of the well-known intellectuals of the day.
