British and French diggers met in the middle of the English tunnel and shook hands. The tunnel was opened four years later. It is 50.45 kilometers long. At its time the tunnel was the most expensive construction project ever proposed. The suggested prize was £5.5 billion. Final prize was £9 billion. Killing bacteria is isolated

Isolation of Legionella pneumophila bacterium was announced in the New England Journal of Medicine. The microbe caused an outbreak of the deadly Legionnaires' disease. The fatality rate is variable. It ranges from 5 to 50 percent depending on specific conditions. Symptoms include a cough, shortness of breath, high fever, muscle pains, headaches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
