Earthquake hits Aceh province

The 2016 Aceh earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Sumatra with an Mw of 6.5 in Aceh province in 2016. The shock was reported to be at a depth of 13 km, categorized as a strong, shallow earthquake. The epicenter was located near the village of Reuleut in Pidie Jaya Regency, 164 km southeast of the province's capital, Banda Aceh.

Beijing issues its first ever red alert for pollution

For the first time since it instituted a warning system in 2013, Beijing has issued a "red alert" over dangerous levels of air pollution. The state news agency Xinhua reported that the city's air is thick with smog and the skyline is obscured by the haze.

A tornado strikes North West London

The tornado struck the Kensal Green area of North-West London, sweeping through several streets over the course of under a minute, injuring 6 people, and causing moderate or severe damage to at least 100 properties. Damages from the tornado were estimated at £10 million.

The Long Island Rail Road massacre

As a Long Island Rail Road train pulled into the Merillon Avenue station in Garden City, New York, a passenger, identified as Colin Ferguson, pulled out a 9mm pistol and started firing at other passengers. He murdered 6 people and wounded 19 others before being stopped by 3 of the passengers: Kevin Blum, Mark McEntee, and Mike O'Connor.

At least 25,000 people dies in Armenian earthquake

The shock occurred in the northern region of Armenia which is vulnerable to large and destructive earthquakes and is part of a larger active seismic belt that stretches from the Alps to the Himalayas. Between 25,000 and 50,000 were killed and up to 130,000 were injured.
