Saudi Arabia announces an end to its 35 year ban on cinemas

The Saudi Arabian Minister of Culture and Information announced that public movie theaters would be allowed. The government hopes that by 2030, Saudi Arabia will already have more than 300 theaters with over 2,000 movie screens. The 1st public film screening was Black Panther beginning in April 2018 for 5 days in a 620-seat cinema owned by AMC Theatres in Riyadh's King Abdullah Financial District.

Iran buys 80 Boeings in a landmark deal

Iran Air finalized a contract to buy 80 planes from US firm Boeing, the official IRNA news agency said, as it seeks to renew its aging fleet despite sanctions. IRNA reported that the contract was worth $16.6 billion, in the first such deal since the 1979 Islamic revolution.

Bernard Madoff is arrested over alleged $50 billion fraud

Bernard Lawrence is an American fraudster and a former stockbroker, investment advisor, and financier. He is the former non-executive chairman of the NASDAQ stock market and the admitted operator of a Ponzi scheme that is considered the largest financial fraud in U.S. history. He was arrested In December and charged with securities fraud.

Che Guevara speaks at the United Nations General Assembly in NYC

During Guevara's hour-long, impassioned address at the UN, he criticized the United Nations' inability to confront the "brutal policy of apartheid" in South Africa, asking "Can the United Nations do nothing to stop this?" Guevara then denounced the United States policy towards their black population.

UNICEF is established

UNICEF was created by the United Nations General Assembly to provide emergency food and healthcare to children in countries that had been devastated by World War II. The Polish physician Ludwik Rajchman is widely regarded as the founder of UNICEF and served as its 1st chairman from 1946. On Rajchman's suggestion, the American Maurice Pate was appointed its first executive director.

Nazi Germany declares war against the United States

Nazi Germany declared war against the United States, in response to what was claimed to be a series of provocations by the United States government when the US was still officially neutral during World War II. The decision to declare war was made by Adolf Hitler, apparently offhand, almost without consultation.

Edward VIII abdication crisis

A constitutional crisis arose when King-Emperor Edward VIII proposed to marry Wallis Simpson, who was divorced from her first husband and was pursuing a divorce of her second. The marriage was opposed by the governments of the UK and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth. Religious, legal, political and moral objections were raised.

Indiana becomes the 19th U.S. state

On June 10, 1816, delegates assembled at Corydon to write the constitution, which was completed in 19 days. President James Madison approved Indiana's admission into the union as the nineteenth state in December. In 1825, the state capital was moved from Corydon to Indianapolis.
